Review Procedure

International Association for Innovations in Educational Assessment (IAIIEA) Journal of Innovations in Educational Assessment

Elements to Be Considered When Reviewing Manuscripts

  • Introduction

Peer review is a system used by journal editors to inform their decisions about manuscript publication. As such, peer review is fundamental to the process of scholarly publication.

  • Guidelines to Authors and Reviewers on the Scope of the Journal of Innovations in Educational Assessment (JIEA)
  1. Title (Check whether it has both Dependent and Independent Variables)
  2. Author(s) details (Ensure Affiliation and email address are available)
  3. Abstract (300 or fewer words). (Does the abstract give a clear account of the scope of the paper?)
  4. Keywords (Not more than 5 words) (Do the keywords adequately reflect the paper?)
  5. Introduction (may contain literature review)
    • Statement of the problem
    • Purpose of the study/study objectives
    • As a reviewer, you should judge the research question in three areas: clarity, importance, and novelty. The manuscript should define all elements of the research question.
  6. Literature Review (brief literature if not combined with introduction)
  7. Theoretical (Optional)
  8. Methodology (Research Method)
    • Design
    • Population
    • Sample and sampling
    • Data collection tools
    • Data collection procedures
    • Data analysis
    • Ethical considerations
    • Limitations
  9. Results and Discussion (Separated or combined)
  10. Conclusion
  11. Recommendations (Does the article distinguish clearly between opinion and empirical evidence?)
  12. Disclosure statement
  13. References (APA referencing style) (Does the article clearly reference citations and quotations using the 7th APA System?)
  14. Full paper should be not more than 4,500 words (or less) excluding the references and abstract (Font - Times New Roman – 12)
  15. Run a plagiarism test and indicate the index.

III. Additional Note to Reviewers

  • Summarize the manuscript in a short paragraph
  • Evaluate the research question (importance, novelty, clarity)
  • Assess the strengths and weaknesses of the study design
  • Evaluate the writing and manuscript organization and assess the usefulness and clarity of tables and figures
  • Consider ethical concerns (conflicts of interest, Institutional Review Board approval, plagiarism)
  • Evaluate the author’s interpretation of the results. It is important to remember that the review serves two purposes: to assist the editor in deciding whether to publish and the author with improving the manuscript. With this in mind, make sure comments are specific, constructive, and substantiated.
  • Assess the paper and indicate whether it is publishable or not with minor or major revisions.

APA references

The basics

APA references generally include information about the authorpublication datetitle, and source. Depending on the type of source, you may have to include extra information that helps your reader locate the source.

Missing information

It is not uncommon for certain information to be unknown or missing, especially with sources found online. In these cases, the reference is slightly adjusted.

Missing element

What to do

Reference format

Author

Start the reference entry with the source title.

Title. (Date). Source.

Date

Write “n.d.” for “no date”.

Author. (n.d.). Title. Source.

Title

Describe the work in square brackets.

Author. (Date). [Description]. Source.

References and in-text citations in APA Style

When it comes to citing sources, more guidelines have been added that make citing online sources easier and clearer.

The biggest changes in the 7th edition are:

  1. The publisher location is no longer included in the reference.
  • Covey, S. R. (2013). The 7 habits of highly effective people: Powerful lessons in personal change. New York, NY:Simon & Schuster.
    • Covey, S. R. (2013). The 7 habits of highly effective people: Powerful lessons in personal change. Simon & Schuster.
  1. The APA in-text citation for works with three or more authors is now shortened right from the first citation. You only include the first author’s name and “et al.”.
  • (Taylor, Kotler, Johnson, & Parker, 2018)
    • (Taylor et al., 2018)
  1. Surnames and initials for up to 20 authors (instead of 7) should be provided in the reference entry.
  • Miller, T. C., Brown, M. J., Wilson, G. L., Evans, B. B., Kelly, R. S., Turner, S. T., . . .Lee, L. H. (2018).
    • Miller, T. C., Brown, M. J., Wilson, G. L., Evans, B. B., Kelly, R. S., Turner, S. T., Lewis, F., Nelson, T. P., Cox, G., Harris, H. L., Martin, P., Gonzalez, W. L., Hughes, W., Carter, D., Campbell, C., Baker, A. B., Flores, T., Gray, W. E., Green, G., . . . Lee, L. H. (2018).
  1. DOIs are formatted the same as URLs. The label “DOI:” is no longer necessary.

  • doi: 10.1080/02626667.2018.1560449
    • https://doi.org/10.1080/02626667.2018.1560449
  1. URLs are no longer preceded by “Retrieved from,” unless a retrieval date is needed. The website name is included (unless it’s the same as the author).

  1. Clear guidelines are provided for including contributors other than authors and editors. For example, when citing a podcast episode, the host of the episode should be included; for a TV series episode, the writer and director of that episode are cited.
  1. Dozens of examples are included for online source types such as podcast episodessocial media posts, and YouTube videos. The use of emojis and hashtags is also explained.

Inclusive and bias-free language

Writing inclusively and without bias is the new standard, and APA’s new publication manual contains a separate chapter on this topic.

The guidelines provided by APA help authors reduce bias around topics such as gender, age, disability, racial and ethnic identity, and sexual orientation, as well as being sensitive to labels and describing individuals at the appropriate level of specificity. Some examples include:

  1. The singular “they”is endorsed as a gender-neutral pronoun.
    • A researcher’s career depends on how often he or sheis cited.
    • A researcher’s career depends on how often they are cited.
  1. Instead of using adjectives as nouns to label groups of people, descriptive phrases are preferred.
  • The poor
    • People living in poverty
  1. Instead of broad categories, you should use exact age ranges that are more relevant and specific.
  • People over 65 years old
    • People in the age range of 65 to 75 years old

APA Paper format

In the 7th edition, APA decided to provide different paper format guidelines for professional and student papers. For both types, a sample paper is included. Some notable changes include:

  1. Increased flexibility regarding fonts: options include Calibri 11, Arial 11, Lucida Sans Unicode 10, Times New Roman 12, and Georgia 11.
  1. The running head on the title page no longer includes the words “Running head:”. It now contains only a page number and the (shortened) paper title.
  • Running head:THE EFFECT OF GOOGLE ON THE INTERNET
    • THE EFFECT OF GOOGLE ON THE INTERNET
  1. The running head is omitted in student papers (unless your instructor tells you otherwise).
  2. Heading levels 3-5 are updated to improve readability.

Mechanics of style

In terms of style, not much has changed in the 7th edition. In addition to some updated and better explained guidelines, there are two notable changes:

  1. Use only one space after a period at the end of a sentence.
  2. Use double quotation marks instead of italics to refer to linguistic examples.
  • APA endorses the use of the singular pronoun they
    • APA endorses the use of the singular pronoun “they”

APA 7th edition citation generator

With Scribbr’s free citation generator you can easily cite your sources according to the new 7th edition guidelines. It’s accurate, fast, and easy to use. Give it a try!

APA7 (American Psychological Association – 7th edition) is an 'author-date' citation style.                                       This means it uses in-text citations which include the author's name and the resource's publication date, followed by a reference list containing fuller item details at the end of the document.

APA Paper Formatting Basics

  • All text should be double-spaced.
  • Use one-inch margins on all sides.
  • All paragraphs in the body are indented.
  • Make sure that the title is centered on the page with your name and school/institution underneath.
  • Use 12-point font throughout.
  • All pages should be numbered in the upper righthand corner.

What is APA 7th edition format example?

An APA in-text citation consists of the author's last name and the year of publication (also known as the author-date system). If you're citing a specific part of a source, you should also include a locator such as a page number or timestamp. For example: (Smith, 2020, p. 170).

How to Cite in APA Format (7th edition) | Guide & Generator

APA in-text citations                                                                                                                                                              The basics

In-text citations are brief references in the running text that direct readers to the reference entry at the end of the paper. You include them every time you quote or paraphrase someone else’s ideas or words to avoid plagiarism.                                                                                                                                                       An APA in-text citation consists of the author’s last name and the year of publication (also known as the author-date system). If you’re citing a specific part of a source, you should also include a locator such as a page number or timestamp. For example: (Smith, 2020, p. 170).

Parenthetical vs. narrative citation

The in-text citation can take two forms: parenthetical and narrative. Both types are generated automatically when citing a source with Scribbr’s APA Citation Generator.

  • Parenthetical citation: According to new research … (Smith, 2020).
  • Narrative citation: Smith (2020) notes that …

Multiple authors and corporate authors

The in-text citation changes slightly when a source has multiple authors or an organization as an author. Pay attention to punctuation and the use of the ampersand (&) symbol.
